conversation between myself and a local man (Porteno) in English

Me: How do you two know each other?
Porteno: We are, uh, partners.
(silent looks around)
Me: You know, in America, if you say "partners" we think "lovers"
Porteno: Uh... that is not what I meant. (embarrassed smile)
